Why Become an NRA Instructor

Since its founding in 1871, one of the National Rifle Association’s core missions has been to promote education and training in the safe and responsible use of firearms. What’s Covered in Instructor Training

NRA Instructor Courses are discipline-specific and designed to prepare you to teach NRA programs effectively and professionally. During training, candidates learn:
 

  • NRA policies and instructional procedures

  • Firearm safety principles and teaching methods

  • Public speaking and classroom management skills

  • Course organization and budget preparation

  • Use of NRA training materials and aids

  • How to evaluate and improve student performance

 
Each participant receives the NRA Trainer’s Guide and official course outlines to ensure consistency and quality in every class taught.

 Gain the skills and confidence to teach with authority.

What’s Expected of Instructor Candidates

​Candidates must demonstrate both technical skill and the ability to teach effectively in their chosen discipline. You’ll learn discipline-specific methods, coaching strategies, and best practices for improving the performance of beginning shooters.

Upon completion, you’ll be prepared to confidently lead NRA - approved courses that educate and inspire future firearm owners.

How to Qualify as a Certified Instructor

​​To become an NRA Certified Instructor, candidates must:

 

  • Have a solid background in firearm safety and marksmanship.

  • Demonstrate safe handling and shooting proficiency.

  • Complete pre-course questionnaires and qualification exercises.

  • Successfully complete the NRA Instructor Training Course in their discipline.

  • Receive endorsement from an NRA Training Counselor.

Once qualified, you’ll be certified to teach NRA courses and carry forward a legacy of safety and professionalism.

Instructor Ratings and Disciplines

NRA Instructor certifications are available in the following disciplines:

 

  • Basic Pistol Shooting

  • Basic Rifle Shooting

  • Basic Shotgun Shooting

  • Personal Protection Inside and Outside the Home

  • Home Firearm Safety

  • Basic Muzzleloading

  • Metallic Cartridge and Shotgun Shell Reloading

  • Range Safety Officer

Each certification allows you to conduct NRA-approved courses that uphold the highest standards of firearm training.
